Gateway Hockey Sends Four to Juniors
(Monroeville, PA) - In Gateway Hockey's 40th year, the celebrations continue.
Four Gateway Gators will be playing Junior hockey next season. It is believed that no western Pennsylvania high school program has sent as many student-athletes to Juniors in their entire history. Coach Gene Perhac is certain though that sending four student-athletes to Juniors in one year is a feat unachieved by any western Pennsylvania high school to date.
Junior hockey is played throughout the United States and Canada by players 18-20 years of age. Playing Juniors allows for a greater challenge than available through their Prep School team, High school varsity or club team, or area Midget teams. American Juniors differ from Canadian Juniors unique as players are immersed into an elite hockey environment without losing their amateur eligibility. As such, American Juniors is the most common pathway to playing elite hockey in college. Nearly all collegiate freshman hockey players have spent one to three years playing post graduate junior hockey. In fact, over the last decade the average age of an NCAA Division One Hockey freshman is nearly 20 years old.
This foursome of Gators has led Gateway to success not seen since the turn of the century. Prior to the 2011-2012 season, Gateway hockey had not visited the post season in nearly a decade. These players are part of a core that sent the Gators to Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League (PIHL) playoff appearances in each of the last two seasons. This group of Gators also delivered the greatest number of career wins and the first PIHL section title since 2001.
The Gateway Hockey Club coaching administration, coaches, players and parents wish good luck to the following Junior-bound players.
About Junior Tyler Perhac
Although most people consider hockey hotbeds to be in cold climates, Tyler will be headed in the opposite direction to south Florida. Tyler has signed with the Palm Beach (Florida) Hawks of the Empire Junior Hockey League. The Empire JHL has 28 teams in locations from south Florida to western New York to New Hampshire. In addition, Tyler will attend Lake Worth (FL) High School while playing hockey daily. The Hawks have placed 11 players into colleges over the last two seasons. Tyler has played for the Gateway Hockey Club since his fourth grade season was a three year varsity starter as a goalie. During his time in the black and gold, Tyler was a two-time PIHL AA All Star. He was near the top of the leaderboard in all classes of the PIHL for saves in each of his three varsity seasons. Included in these numbers are three games this past season with over 40 saves and one game with 55 saves. Tyler is an Honors student at Gateway and is the son of Gene and Roseanne Perhac.
About Senior Camden Cacolice
Camden's journey to Junior hockey will return him to the area where he was raised. Camden has signed with the Springfield (Massachusetts) Junior ?Pics of the United States Premier Hockey League (USPHL). While growing up in Enfield, Connecticut, Camden played for the youth branch of this club as a Squirt. During his three year Gateway career, Camden was a two-time PIHL AA All Star and a Post-Gazette East ?Stellar Six?. Due to Gateway?s limited defense corps, Camden was moved from his normal forward position back to defense as a sophomore. Although still playing forward for his amateur team, he has played defense almost exclusively for Gateway. Camden led the Gators with 32 points during his senior season including an impressive 13 game point streak. Camden ranks third on the club over the last decade with a 1.33 Points Per Game average. Camden graduated as an Honors student from Gateway and is the son of Paul and Carolyn Cacolice.
About Senior Jon Kasper
Jon will also be taking the trek to Massachusetts as well after signing with the Springfield Jr Pics of the USPHL. The USPHL has 15 organizations from Pennsylvania to Maine. Jon drew interest and an offer from the Junior ?Pics organization last season, but he chose to return for his senior season so he could graduate from Gateway High. Jon will be playing for a Junior organization that has seen an impressive 37 NHL draft choices from their ranks (including NHL Penguins Dan Lacouture, Colin McDonald and Bill Guerin). Even more impressive are the regular player commitments to NCAA teams each season. Jon was a PIHL AA All Star in 2011-2012. He led or was tied for the Gateway team lead in goals for both his junior and senior seasons. His productivity was even more impressive with limited participation in each of his seasons due to his amateur team schedule. Jon ranks in the top five in Points Per Game over the last decade with more than one point per game. Jon graduated as an Honors student from Gateway and is the son of Joe and Judy Kasper.
About Senior Jordan Mardiorssian
Jordan is the fourth Gators preparing to play Juniors in 2013-2014. Currently, he has been tendered offers from both the Portland (Maine) Junior Pirates and Boston (Massachusetts) Junior Bruins both in the USPHL. Jordan played for the Pittsburgh Pens Elite for the past several years. Although he was not able to play for Gateway this past year due to his amateur schedule, he was an important offensive contributor for the Gators each of his freshman, sophomore and junior years. Jordan was in the top four in goals scored each of his years wearing the Gateway black and gold. In 2011-2012, he was named to the PIHL AA All Star team. Jordan graduated as an Honors student from Gateway and is the son of Laurie and Red Mardiorssian.
About the Gateway Hockey Club
Established in 1972, Gateway Hockey has a proud tradition of promoting athletic and academic excellence. The club provides Gateway School District students in grades six thru 12 with the opportunity to play ice hockey at the AA level of competition, and has enjoyed tremendous success building the character, skills, and winning attitude of its players. Without question, the Club's goal and expectation is to win at every level of play, whether Freshman, Junior Varsity, or Varsity, but the true strength of this program is that winning is always judged by more than the score on the board.

Gateway Gators Class of 1977 - 50th Birthday Reunion Recap
The class of 1977 - 50th birthday party was a big success - everyone who attended was glad they did.
We had over 100 at the bar on Friday night - and over 50 at the picnic on Saturday (see pic). Thanks again to Todd and Alice Leighton for making the picnic happen. The park was perfect and the weather even cooperated.
The most commonly heard expression at the reunion was "I can't believe we are 50". If you haven't been to a recent reunion - let me assure you that it isn't like high school. We are all grayer and heavier than we used to be - nobody brags about themselves anymore (we talk about kids and grandkids and the good old days) - and all the old cliques have faded away. It was just a group of 50 year olds getting together and talking. It was fun to see all of our old friends and to make some new friends.
After 32 years many of the details of high school have been forgotten. I overheard 2 of our classmates talking - and one said "I can't believe you don't remember me - we went out once in high school".
We were a little disappointed at the turn out of the local Gators. Many traveled hundreds of miles to attend and were surprised that many local Gators wouldn't drive 10 miles to attend. Don't worry because all will be forgiven if they attend the next reunion.
Our next reunion is our 35th - we have selected August 4th and 5th, 2012 for the 35th reunion. More details will follow - and we will need to decide on format - picnic or more formal dinner or???.
Please plan on attending - and please check the Gator website every couple months.
I am proud to say that the class of 1977 has 213 registered on the Gatewaygators.net website - the highest number of any class.
Hope to see you Aug 5th 2012.

Class of 1983 Informal 25th Get Together Announcement
Since a formal reunion seems to have passed us by, an underground movement is pleased to announce two dates over this holiday season to allow those visiting or locals to get together without waiting another five years.
The plan is to converge at the Rivertowne Pour House (the old Parkway Tavern) on the following dates:
12/27/08 (Sat) - 7pm-?
It's (still) a family restaurant, so if you want to show off your little ones - please do (with the caveat that others will no doubt be imbibing).
Dress is casual.
Again this is an impromptu affair. The restaurant has not been reserved, so it is recommended to make a reservation for a table if you plan on dining or just want to lock down some seating - otherwise we'll see you at the bar.
If you can make it, we'll see you there. If you can't; hopefully, we'll see you in five. Either way - spread the word...

The 1985 Gateway Varsity Football team will be inducted into the Gateway Sports Hall of Fame on November 10, 2007 at the Churchill Valley Country Club. This team will now join Gateways' other four football championship teams - 1969 - 1972 - 1974 - 1986. The 1985 team tied North Hills 0-0 in the championship game at Three Rivers Stadium. At the time, North Hills was ranked nationally. Gateway was extremely fast and very solid up front. The teams matched up well.

She had the very first pediatric double lung transplant in the country at Children's back in 89. Sadly, 18 years later, her body is rejecting the organs! She will need another miracle. Her mom Darlien left her life behind in Tacoma, WA to be by the side of her 32 year old "baby girl". Costs are ENORMOUS, so I thought I could help. I have the Gateway Clipper Fleet reserved for a benefit dinner cruise & auction on the date above! I NEED YOUR HELP spreading the word, and getting donations from local businesses. I'm also working hard to secure a few PREMIER prizes that will help me sell 540 tickets (Majestic capacity) at $100 per plate! I'm begging anyone with contacts in the automotive sales or local sports industries to request a generous donation!!!! Car/truck for auction, ticket packages, autographed merchandise etc... Also looking for official sponsors (this will be in the news)! Any and ALL assistance greatly appreciated! Please call 412.266.5089 or email djmattp@comcast.net with good news! You may also contact my wife Melody @ melodyporter@comcast.net or 412.216.6044 to purchase your tickets for this event. Sincerely, Matt Porter
Our prayers and condolences go out to the families of these youths...

Lisa (Corl) Zapalac, Gateway Class of 83 sent us this tidbit:
I just came across this while I was in Target spring of 2006 and noticed this clock on the shelves that caught my attention because it looked like old yearbook photos. The clock was designed to put your own photos in them where the numbers would be. When I looked closer, I realized that the stock photos were a page out of the Gateway yearbook - and the photos were seniors from the class of 83. I bought the clock and emailed a few people who's faces were on it, and put it up. I got a new scanner and was cleaning out a closet today and found it, so I took it apart and scanned the pictures as they are arranged on the clock. I couldn't believe it. Of all of the photos that Target Corp. could have used it was a page from our high school year book and my class. And it was in a Target in Houston!
I wanted to send it to you and didn't know if there is anyway to post this, I am sure people would get a kick out of it. I also think that some Gateway grad must work for Target at the corporate level :)

Please help the Gateway Class of 1972 locate some of their missing classmates. Download this PDF and see if you know the wherabouts of any of them...
We have 47 alumni with @earthlink.net email addresses...
Due to inbound email blocking by Earthlink (which generates an email back to the sender and requires them to go to a page and type in a passcode...), you will never receive a message from our site. We suggest you immediately update your profile and change your email address on file to a different email address OUTSIDE the earthlink network, OR add a trust for email sent to your mailbox from @gatewaygators.net.
We are throwing a party Saturday May 26th during Memorial day weekend. After you do your family cookout, come check us out at Mighty Dog's in Penn Hills. Normally, we have a party during Thanksgiving weekend but wanted do something in the summer time also. Great food and cold drinks will be served. There will also be a cash bar. However, this is a family affair so don't worry about the baby sitter, just bring the kids along.
All that we ask is a $10 donation and kids are free! All proceeds go to the Brandon N. Conley Memorial Scholarship. Therefore, please make out any checks to the Brandon N Conley Memorial Scholarship.
Since we started this reunion, we have given out over $4500 in scholarships to Gateway High School graduates. However, our new goal is to raise $10,000 for an endowed scholarship at IUP. Please pass the word and come out for a fun night and to see old friends.

03/21/2007:
Monroeville's largest employer - Westinghouse, who has been a staple in the community for more than 35 years, has dealt a big blow to Monroeville - and Gateway School District - by deciding to move to Cranberry Township. The big winners - Butler County and Seneca Valley School District, will reap the rewards of a 3,000+ person workforce headed their way by 2009/2010 and taking their $70,000 average salaries with them to Butler county. By leaving the 138 acre campus where many of our mothers, fathers, neighbors and classmates worked, Westinghouse will leave a large void in Monroeville. The repercussions of this decision by Westinghouse not only impacts Monroeville, but also surrounding communities and school districts, such as Churchill, Penn Hills, Plum, Murrysville, Penn Township, and others, where many of the 2,100 Monroeville based employees live.

Retired Gateway Elementary School principal Bruce Short can still picture Michael O'Toole, then principal of Gateway High School, sitting at his desk in his office with a cigar in his mouth.
"He always told you the way it was," Mr. Short said. "He was firm but fair."
Mr. O'Toole, who died at the age of 89 at Braddock Hospital on Sunday, was a no-nonsense principal.

How YOU can help...
January 9, 2006
Thank you to all the alumni who have signed up so far...
We've had great success, but we really need a few minutes of your time in the following ways:
1) Forward this site's address www.gatewaygators.net to any Gateway Alumni FAMILY MEMBER, FRIEND, etc. This is a GREAT TIME to reconnect with a Graduate you haven't spoken to or heard from for a while.
2) If you are a member of a "Class Committee", please forward this web site along with an invitation to join to your entire list. We will be glad to post your committee info to this site, but we are trying to build the "one point" master directory of all Gateway alumni.
3) If you have or are part of a Gateway affiliate site, such as Gateway Soccer, Gateway Band, etc. Please POST A LINK from that site to our site. Let us know you are doing this and we will link back to you.
4) If anyone has a CD-ROM version of the Gateway Alumni directory which was published around 1998, Please Contact Us
Important info about the authentication emails...
When you initially Join this site, you will receive an automated email with an authentication link. You must click that link to get full access to the site.
Unfortunately, we are experiencing about a 10% failure rate on the automated emails... mostly due to Spam filtering beyond our control. In most cases the emails are blocked by your ISP or are moved right into your JUNK MAIL FOLDER.
If you JOIN this site and don't receive an authentication email WITHIN 10 MINUTES, please contact Us and we can manually authorize you.
GatewayGators.net is one month old!
